How to Prep Your Westchester Furnace for a Cold NY Winter

A 7-step furnace prep checklist tailored to Westchester County winters — what homeowners can do themselves and what a licensed HVAC tech should handle.

Westchester winters are unforgiving. Lows in the teens, sudden cold snaps, and decades-old housing stock mean your furnace works harder here than in most of the country. A little prep in October or early November can prevent the 2 AM no-heat call in January.

1. Replace your air filter

A clogged filter is the #1 cause of furnace short-cycling and blower failures we see across Yonkers, White Plains, and Scarsdale. Swap a 1" filter every 1–3 months during heating season; a 4–5" media filter every 6–12 months.

2. Clear the area around the furnace

Keep at least 3 feet of clearance. Stored boxes, paint cans, and laundry detergent near a gas furnace are both a fire hazard and a CO risk.

3. Test your thermostat

Switch from cool to heat a week before you need it. If the call for heat doesn't fire the burner within 60 seconds, schedule a service visit before the cold hits.

4. Check vents and cold-air returns

Walk the house and confirm every supply register and return grille is open and unblocked by furniture or rugs. Restricted returns drop efficiency and stress the heat exchanger.

5. Inspect the flue and intake (high-efficiency systems)

For 90%+ AFUE condensing furnaces, look at the PVC intake and exhaust outside the house. Wasps, leaves, and snow drifts can block them — a blocked intake will lock the furnace out.

6. Test your CO detector

Every Westchester home with a gas furnace, boiler, or water heater needs a working CO detector on each level. Press the test button. Replace batteries. Replace the unit itself every 5–7 years.

7. Book a professional tune-up

A pro tune-up includes combustion analysis, heat exchanger inspection, gas pressure check, igniter and flame sensor cleaning, and amp-draw readings on the blower. These are the failures that strand families in February.
