Why One Radiator Isn't Heating in Your Pelham Home

Cold radiator in only one room? Pelham's 1920s steam and hot-water systems have predictable causes — most fixable in under an hour.

Pelham (10803) and Pelham Manor (10803) are full of 1920s–1940s homes on steam or hot-water radiator systems. When one radiator goes cold, it's almost never the boiler — it's the radiator itself. Here's how to diagnose.

First — figure out what kind of system you have

  • One pipe coming into each radiator + an air valve on the side = single-pipe steam
  • Two pipes per radiator = two-pipe steam OR hot water
  • Pressure gauge on boiler reads 0–2 psi = steam
  • Pressure gauge reads 12–25 psi = hot water (hydronic)

Single-pipe steam — the #1 cause: dead air valve

The little brass or chrome valve on the side of the radiator (the one that hisses) is a vent. When it fails closed, steam can't push air out, and the radiator stays cold. $15–$25 part, 5-minute fix if you're handy.

How to test: Remove the valve while the system is calling for heat. If steam now reaches the radiator, the valve was bad.

Two-pipe hot water — the #1 cause: trapped air

Hot water radiators need to be bled annually. The bleeder is a small square or screwdriver-slot valve at the top of the radiator.

1. Turn off the boiler 2. Hold a cup under the bleeder 3. Open the valve until water (not air) sprays out 4. Close, restart boiler

Other Pelham-specific causes

  • Stuck thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) — common in 1980s renovations
  • Pitched wrong — single-pipe radiators must slope toward the inlet; furniture or settled floors can change the pitch
  • Sediment in the riser — Pelham's older cast-iron piping accumulates sludge
  • Closed isolation valve — sometimes a contractor or prior owner closed a valve and forgot

When to call a pro

  • Boiler pressure dropping repeatedly (leak somewhere)
  • Banging/water hammer that won't stop
  • Radiator leaking from the body (cracked — replacement only)
  • Multiple radiators cold (likely circulator pump or near-boiler piping)
